Post-Quali Quotes From Motegi, Japan - 250cc & 125cc

250cc

5th Álvaro Bautista: 1.51.821 (19 laps):
"It was a shame because I ran into a group of riders at the end of the session and only got one good lap in, which was before I'd got into my rhythm, but I'm happy because our pace was good and I'm only four tenths off pole. I would have preferred to be on the front row but it wasn't to be and the important thing is that we're not as far back on the grid as we have been recently. Let's see if we can get a good start tomorrow and be in the front group from the off. The important thing will be to stay concentrated and try to stay in the fight for victory until the end. The times have been close throughout practice so it looks like being a fun, close race."

6th Héctor Faubel: 1.51.973 (19 laps):
"I'm really happy because we've been around eighth position all weekend and in the end I've managed to qualify sixth. For the race I hope I can stick with the lead group over the opening laps, although we have to be aware of our limits. I think we're doing a great job so we want to continue like this from now on. We've worked hard on the front end of the Aprilia and I'm pretty happy with the results. This afternoon the track got cold and the feeling wasn't as good as this morning but I managed to get my lap time down so I'm satisfied."

125cc

5th Gábor Talmacsi: 1.59.179 (12 laps):
"I really didn't expect this result. After free practice I was in a lot of pain and I told my team and my manager that I might not be able to race tomorrow. Doctor Costa found a good solution for my hand and I feel much better now. I can't say I'm totally fit but I can ride and the set-up of my Aprilia is fantastic. I can't brake too hard but the perfect chassis set-up we've found means I don't have to. I didn't push too hard at the start of qualifying and saved my energy for two fast laps at the end, which I think was the right decision. If my hand is the same as this tomorrow I think I can ride although I can't predict a result because we'll have to wait and see how it holds out."

10th Sergio Gadea: 1.59.695 (12 laps):
"I crashed this morning when the bike folded on the front and I didn't have time to react. We solved our front end issues and in qualifying the bike ran well, although we could have done with a bit more from the engine. It is costing us half a second at the moment and we're losing another half through a combination of the front suspension and my riding. I think if Smith hadn't have crashed I could have got a good time behind him but I need a reference for my braking and I'm always on the limit. Starting from tenth tomorrow should at least allow us to have a better race than Indianapolis."

29th Adrián Martín: 2.02.069 (11 laps):
"This morning with the lower temperatures the engine didn't suffer as much and ran better. At the start of the afternoon it wasn't revving high and I really had to push hard to make gradual improvements. My objective was to lap around the 2'01 mark and if I could have latched on to somebody maybe I could have managed it, but the engine wasn't running well and I didn't feel comfortable. Like at Misano I'll be going out tomorrow to enjoy myself and to fight for as high a finish as possible."

Bradley Smith to ride for Team Aspar in 2009

Team Aspar will have a new rider in its rows next season as Brit Bradley Smith will join the 125cc squad in 2009. Smith is scheduled to sign the new contract on Friday and make it official.

Jorge Martinez:
“I have admired Bradley for a long time and I wanted to sign him last season. For me he is one of the best young riders in the world championship at the moment and I think with us he can go to the next level.
I think there is no doubt he has the potential to fight for the world championship next season and I am very confident he will be with us for 2009"

Indianapolis GP: Quotes after 250cc QP2

6th Álvaro Bautista: 1.46.174 (17 laps)
“There was another rider trying to get a tow off me so I closed the line a little, hit a bump and I lost the front of the bike. I was all over the place from the previous corner and I couldn’t save it. During qualifying we tried a few things and at the end I felt a little better – mainly with the tyres, on the rear and front. We ruled out a front and we have a clear idea about which rear we like. Our pace is good – maybe not the same as the guys in front but not far off. We’ll have to work more for the race and keep our fingers crossed for the weather.”

8th Héctor Faubel: 1.46.360 (19 laps)
“This is the second consecutive race that we’re starting from the second row and that is our target. We’re close to the lead riders – there are obviously three guys with a better pace than everybody else but as long as I am in the fight to stay with them I’ll be satisfied. The track conditions are much better in the dry. It was really slippery in the wet yesterday, especially in the first section. The more the bikes have been out there the better the grip has got and now we’re having fun at Indianapolis. We’ll work more on the gear ratio in the warm-up because that’s where we’re suffering the most. I think if nothing strange happens like Misano we can get a good result tomorrow.”

Indianapolis GP: Quotes after 125cc QP2

16th Gábor Talmacsi: 1.52.170 (12 laps)
"I was in quite a lot of pain in both sessions. I'm finding it hard to turn the bike and I lose more and more time with every lap. Because of that I lost the front coming through the chicane, although luckily I escaped without any further injury. The injection they gave me at lunchtime to deal with the pain worked well but when you want to ride on the limit you need all your strength and feeling. I wasn't able to do any practice starts so I honestly don't know how the race will work out. It is going to be a tough one and we need a bit of luck on our side."

23rd Sergio Gadea: 1.53,140 (14 laps)
"This is our worst qualifying performance of the season and I honestly didn't expect to be this far down. I just can't seem to get a good feeling with the Aprilia and I'm losing a lot of time through the corners. We are going to have to radically change the set-up of the bike and see if we can improve tomorrow. A wet race could be favourable for us because I felt much more comfortable yesterday. The engine is working well but we have problems in the cycle part."

25th Patrick Jacobsen: 1.53.209 (13 laps)
"I'm really happy because we've worked well on the dry track. I tried my best out there and the results are coming. My objective was to push hard and learn as much as I could and I think I'm achieving that. I went wide in turn two, partly because of the wind, and lost the front end. I got back up but there was no time for more. I'm happy with the job we've done and with my grid position. I'm looking forward to a fun race tomorrow and I want to keep learning. Who knows? Maybe I'll even get a good result."

Indianapolis GP: 250cc Qualifying 2

The 250cc riders underwent the final qualifying in dry conditions, but nontheless there were a lot of crashes and visits off-track including Mapfre Aspar rider Álvaro Bautista who already stood in first row, but then had a small crash with only 3 minutes left which robbed him of any chance to improve his laptime and eventually relegated him to 6th position. With him in the second row will be his teammate Hector Faubel who showed a strong qualifying performance and will start from 8th position on the grid tomorrow.

Indianapolis GP: 125cc Qualifying 2

The 125cc riders had the first chance to experience the Indianapolis under dry conditions in the final qualifying this afternoon. With plenty of crashes during the qualifying there will be an interesting starting grid tomorrow.
The Bancaja Aspar Team did not have a very good day with an injured Gabor Talmacsi being the best positioned rider of the team on 16th spot. Teammate Sergio Gadea had a difficult weekend so far and will only start from 23rd position. Wildcard rider Patrick Jacobsen showed some good potential and finished the qualifing as 25th.

Indianapolis GP: Quotes after 250cc QP1

13th Héctor Faubel: 2.06.442 (5 laps)
“It was a pretty strange day for everybody because the track was practically flooded. With so much rain it is difficult to enjoy a circuit so I’d love the chance to get a feel for it in the dry tomorrow, although the forecast is for more rain. It is a nice circuit with a good mix of corners but the asphalt is quite bad. Like a lot of the riders we decided to come in halfway through the session this afternoon. I thought about going back out five minutes from the end but we decided it was wiser to stay in and wait for tomorrow. My Aprilia is working well so if we can get it better tomorrow it will just be a case of improving my riding around this new track.”

21st Álvaro Bautista: 2.09.091 (9 laps)
“The circuit has quite good grip, the biggest problem is all the puddles that are forming on the new asphalt. The other sections absorb the water quite well but the new asphalt is really slippery. In general we have to keep working to gain confidence with the bike, especially in the first section, where I don’t feel confident. To start out at a new circuit in the wet makes it really hard to try things but I hope we can improve tomorrow. In theory we don’t have anything to try but to get plenty of laps in and get better references around the track.”

Indianapolis GP: Quotes after 125cc QP1

11th Gábor Talmacsi: 2.01.238 (4 laps)
“The Aprilia was working perfectly and my feeling was as good as it could be, but perhaps because I was trying to go too fast too soon I had this accident. I didn’t feel as though I was on the edge but it was a silly crash. The consequences have proved to be much more serious than I thought but I’m not ready to throw the towel in yet. I’ll see how it develops this evening and overnight before having some checks, an injection and a special support fitted in the morning. I can’t say anything else other than that I intend to try and race at all cost.”

20th Sergio Gadea: 2.03.571 (12 laps)
“It’s a strange circuit – I think it would be great fun in the dry but it looks like it’s going to stay wet all weekend. There are a lot of puddles and because of the oval all the water collects on our circuit. We had a few set-up problems this morning but in the afternoon we found some solutions and with an hour-long session tomorrow we can find some more. I feel comfortable but I’m not on the limit yet.”

26th Patrick Jacobsen: 2.04.545 (13 laps)
“This circuit is quite different to anywhere else I’ve ridden. The level of the riders in the World Championship is obviously very high. The weather is crazy but we’re all in the same boat. I’m satisfied with the result for the first day, taking into account that it is my first day in the World Championship and the only way is up. I need to get some more laps under my belt, get a better feel for the bike and slowly the results will start to come.”

Indianapolis GP: 250cc Qualifying 1

A completely wet qualifying saw some very unique results in the 250cc class. Many of the usual suspects in the Top 10 barely qualified or were even outside the qualifying time limit. It remains to be seen who can be really fast on this new circuit.

Indianapolis GP: 125cc Qualifying 1

Torrential rain made the first qualifying of the 125cc class in Indianapolis very difficult for the riders. Large puddles on the track posed a serious safety risk and due to the bad weather conditions we saw some unusal riders in the first few rows of the provisional grid.
It also was a bad day for Bancaja Aspar rider Gabor Talmacsi who fractured his left scaphoid bone in a crash. However, he will try and participate in the race on Sunday.

Quote from Patrick Jacobsen Ahead of Indianapolis GP

"I am enormously grateful to the Bancaja Aspar team for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Grand Prix at Indianapolis. This is the first time that I will have ridden in a round of the World MotoGP and I'm looking forward to it... it's like a dream and I want to put on a good show to all the American fans who are coming to the circuit.
The fact that nobody has raced here previously gives great hope to novice riders like myself, as everyone starts on an equal footing. "
